Benni McCarthy revealed that witnessing his father's aggressive behavior after drinking in his childhood made him choose to avoid alcohol.

Former Manchester United first-team coach Benni McCarthy has opened up about a sensitive moment in his life when growing up at Hanover Park in the Cape Flats of Cape Town, South Africa.

The area is mostly known for gang violence and Benni McCarthy recalls how life was living in such an insecure place, something that influenced how he lives his life to date.

Benni McCarthy explained that his father, Dudley McCarthy, used to love taking alcohol during the weekends and he would become very aggressive afterwards.

McCarthy got to experience his violence firsthand, and just like any child, such an environment greatly shaped his mindset growing up. Some children chose to take the path of being alcoholics due to that but Benni McCarthy decided to take a different path.

The experience made him avoid alcohol for the rest of his life and he pointed out that he never wanted to cause harm to the people around him.

McCarthy revealed that he wanted to foster a healthy environment for his children, Lio Romero, Minna McCarthy, Miya McCarthy, Allegra McCarthy, and Lima Rose.

“Obviously I grew up in the Cape Flats and life there was rough outside with the gang and stuff but yeah, in my household, my dad on a Friday and Saturday used to like a drink and I sometimes used to see what it does and that’s one of the reasons why I don’t drink,” Benni McCarthy said in an interview on Radio 2000.

“Growing up I used to see how easily you can just snap and you have a little pop and that was not the man I wanted to become. I wanted to be different, I wanted to be someone that loves the woman that bears my children.”

The new Harambee Stars coach revealed that from the experience, he also wanted to be a better husband and protect his wife and children.

The South African had the fear of the unknown, revealing that he might have been worse if he drunk and he never wanted to test the limits.

Benni McCarthy admitted that growing up in such a violent set up robbed him of the security and love from his parent, something he would never want his children and wife to miss out on.

“I wanted to be her protector, her everything, not the one that causes harm and hurt. I grew up a little bit in that and because I experienced it firsthand, it made me aware that what I see is not what I wanted to become,” Benni McCarthy said.

“I avoided alcohol because I wasn’t sure what I might become because people always say, ‘Like father, like son.’

“I didn’t want that to be an excuse so that when I start having drinks and then I become my father. That was why I followed my path and wanted to be different.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy has been making headlines following news that he is set to become Harambee Stars' new coach. The official unveiling will be held on Monday, March 3 at the KICC Pavilion at 1:45 PM EAT.
