Thomas Tuchel explained why he turned down the chance to coach Manchester United but accepted the England FA's proposal.

Thomas Tuchel has accepted the FA’s proposal and he would become the next England national team manager, replacing Lee Carsley, who replaced Gareth Southgate after a seven-year stint.

Tuchel’s decision comes months after he turned down INEOS, who approached him to become the next Manchester United manager, while they deliberated on sacking Erik ten Hag. In his first press conference as Three Lions boss, the former Borussia Dortmund manager explained the reason for his decision.

What Tuchel said

After a disastrous season in which Ten Hag led the Red Devils to their worst finish in Premier League history, eighth, the club's leadership planned on sacking him.

As Pulse Sports reported, Tuchel was a preferred candidate to replace him, and INEOS boss Jim Ratcliffe met with him to sell him on the vision. However, he turned down the proposal, and Manchester United continued with the Dutchman in charge

Typically, top-level managers are more attracted to club coaching, given the significant pay difference from what national federations can offer. Hence, Tuchel was asked why he rejected Manchester United’s offer but accepted England's.

“Well, I like the idea here at the FA... and the way their CEO Mark presented it,” he said, per Fabrizio Romano. “That was a decision for this job, and not against anyone else or any club.”

Tuchel’s nationality has attracted criticism, as some people believe the England national team manager should be English. In his presser, he expressed his commitment to the role.

“I’m proud to be here, I’m proud to represent England. I want to put the second star on this shirt.”

“We will work hard for the biggest target in football, making our dream come true at the World Cup 2026.

“I just have a German passport... but all of these supporters can feel my passion for the English Premier League, how I love to work here, how I love to live here... hopefully I can convince them I am proud to be an England manager.”
