Chelsea winger Noni Madueke has been challenged by manager Enzo Maresca to improve his work rate despite his recent goal against Southampton.
While Madueke scored a fine goal and assisted another in the 5-1 victory over Southampton, Maresca believes the England international can offer more.
The winger has ensured criticism from pundits and fans since the start of the season, with his inconsistent actions being the major talking point.
Maresca give reasons behind Madueke’s bench role
Speaking after the win against the Saints, the Chelsea boss did not hold back on the winger.
"Noni can do much more. He can do much more. The moment he starts to score or assist and is happy, he starts to drop a little bit, and the reason why he was not playing is because I do not like the way he trained," said Maresca.
The Chelsea boss emphasised the need for consistent hard work and ambition: "He has to understand that he has to train every day well."
“He has to be ambitious. He scored one tonight; he has to go for the second one and the third one. He has to give more assists."
Maresca highlights the depth in Chelsea's attacking options
With players like Pedro Neto, Nicolas Jackson, and Jadon Sancho ready to step up. He stressed the importance of maintaining high standards and competition for places:
"Noni is not allowed to drop because Pedro is there and doing fantastic. If Pedro drops, then Noni is there. This is what they have to understand if we want to be there or be close for something important."
Chelsea's impressive win over Southampton took them to second place, seven points behind league leaders Liverpool. The Blues will face a tough test against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
