Peseiro served as Real Madrid’s assistant coach in the 2003/2004 season under former Manchester United assistant coach Carlos Queiroz.
Peseiro on Mourinho's advice
The Portuguese tactician left his job as the head coach of Nacional to assist Queiroz at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Peseiro has now revealed he never wanted to take the job until he spoke to Mourinho. The former Braga manager revealed he found it difficult to leave his head coach role to become someone’s assistant, but Mourinho convinced him to take it.
"I was in Brazil scouting players when my old teacher Carlos Queiroz called me. He told me he was going to Real Madrid and wanted me as his assistant." This was 2003, the summer that David Beckham joined the garlanded group that became known as Galacticos,” Peseiro told SkySports.
"I did not decide immediately, I called Jose Mourinho because he was my friend. Remember that he had been an assistant at Barcelona. I asked him what he thought because I was already a head coach. He told me, 'Go. Because you can learn a lot there,” The Super Eagles manager added.
Mourinho’s advice pays off for Peseiro
Although Peseiro spent just one season at Real Madrid, Mourinho’s advice paid off for him as he went on to coach other clubs.
Peseiro was appointed as Sporting Lisbon’s head coach immediately after leaving Real Madrid before going on to manage clubs like Al-Hilal, Panathinaikos, and Rapid Bucharest.
After his stint in Romania, Peseiro managed Saudi Arabia’s national team until 2011. He went on to manage clubs like Braga, Al-Wahda, Al-Ahly and FC Porto.
