Santos FC, one of Brazil's most historic football clubs, faced their first relegation from the top flight in over a century, marking a significant moment in the world of football.

In what is one of the most staggering stories of the calendar year in football, Santos FC, one of Brazil's most historic clubs, faced their first relegation from the top flight in over a century, and this incensed fans of the side, who, unfamiliar with the sinking feeling of the drop, took to violence to express their misery.

The Legacy of Santos FC

Santos are possibly the most storied side in Brazilian football, with a rich history, particularly highlighted by the golden era in the 1950s and 1960s.

This period was marked by the brilliance of three-time World Cup winner Pele, who played from 1956 to 1974, leading the team to numerous successes, including Brazilian Serie A titles and Copa Libertadores wins.

Santos was also the breeding ground for talents like Neymar, Robinho, and more recently, Rodrygo; hence, their relegation signals the fall of one of football’s true powerhouses.

The Peixe have had a tumultuous year, and although they went into the final game of the season facing relegation, they had their fates in their hands.

However, they fell to a 2-1 defeat, no thanks to a stoppage-time that shattered the hopes of the home crowd. Santos came so close to safety, and being a lone point short doomed them to second-division football for the next season.

The Aftermath and Fan Reaction

According to Marca, the relegation of Santos FC sparked intense reactions from the fans, leading to riots and violent protests in the city.

The club's relegation led to scenes of despair and disbelief as fans grappled with the stark reality of their beloved team's fall from grace.

The violence was said to have begun in the area of Vila Belmiro where the game took place, and soon spread across the city. The fans razed cars, buses and buildings in their show of aggression.
