Benni McCarthy explained that McDonald Mariga had an impact on the decision he made to join Harambee Stars as head coach.

Aside from being the FKF Vice president, which was a factor he considered, Benni McCarthy revealed that McDonald Mariga brings with him a wealth of experience from his playing days.

Being in the managerial position in the federation comes as a plus for Harambee Stars and Benni McCarthy admitted that he wanted to work in such a setup.

“The people that were taking charge, obviously I know Mariga, McDonald Mariga the vice president, I know him very well and you know, something is cooking when ex-football players get managerial positions,” Benni McCarthy said in an interview on NTV’s Sport On.

“When an ex-football player who has achieved so much gets that position, you know big things are coming. That is a country that understands that football is a priority and they are going to do things the right way.”

McDonald Mariga’s glittering career includes turning out for top clubs like Enköpings SK, Helsingborgs IF, Inter Milan, and Parma. Among his stand out performances include being the first Kenyan footballer to play in the UEFA Champions League.

Benni McCarthy believes his accomplishments in his career will play a huge role in the success of Harambee Stars.

“Obviously, Mariga has played on the highest level, he’s played in Italy, won the Champions League and the Serie A is no joke,” Benni McCarthy added.

“If you have someone who has the kind of discipline and commitment to play on a high level, and you put him in the federation, that means that they want to achieve the unthinkable.

If the path of success is going that way, then you want to be apart of that national team. On the federation side we are covered because we’ve got an ex-footballer who is the deputy president and then on the football side, we’ve got everything covered.”

On top of McDonald Mariga’s achievements, Benni McCarthy explained that he also brings his experience on board.

The former Manchester United attacking coach has played for clubs like Ajax, Porto, Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United and Orland Pirates.

Benni McCarthy has also enjoyed coaching stints with clubs like Hibernian, Sint-Truiden, Cape Town City, AmaZulu and Manchester United.

He explained that working with McDonald Mariga, who also shares the same achievements, will be a plus for Harambee Stars.

“I’ve played on the highest level and there is an amount of information that I have that I gathered over the years from playing against some of the best players, from being managed by some of the best managers in the world and working with one of the best managers in modern football,” Benni McCarthy added.

“Now I can give it to some of my players at my disposal in the Kenyan national team. The two combine and that’s why I thought Kenya was the right place.”

As he continues to work out a winning plan for Harambee Stars, Benni McCarthy is determined to work with McDonald Mariga to make things work.
