Kakamega Homeboyz's head coach, Patrick Odhiambo, has revealed the reasons he was far from pleased with his side, despite their spirited performance against Libyan outfit Al Hilal Benghazi during their Confederation Cup debut.
Homeboyz created a flurry of chances, especially in the second half, but failed to capitalize on them and lacked punch on the counterattack in a match held at Nyayo National Stadium, a weapon they had utilized to secure the cup victory last season.

Homeboyz will have to beat or manage a score draw away to Al Hilal in order to qualify and face Rayon Sports of Rwanda in the second leg.
“They were taking way too many touches which was allowing Al Hilal to get back into shape, but I believe that it will not be that difficult away because the game is far from over,” Odhiambo said.
“Both fullbacks were giving us a torrid time bombing forwards, which was forcing the likes of Mudavadi to fold back, meaning we were short of options moving forward. If we would have utilized those chances quicker, it would have been better.
Odhiambo subbed off Kevin Amwayi at half time to the surprise of many, considering he is always one of the players that makes a difference for Abana Beingo.
He also decided to take off striker Moses Shummah, which left people puzzled considering Homeboyz decided to adopt a direct approach after his substitution, which people would have expected would have suited his areal prowess.
“I subbed Amwayi off because I had seen he had put in a big shift. He did well in the first half but in the second, I needed more punch,” Odhiambo said.
“When I subbed on Oscar (Paul) I wanted him to carry on because it was very important to get a goal. We looked for a goal and that is why we did it.

The towering defender has revealed how using online platforms have helped identify Al Hilal's strengths and weaknesses.
“We also noticed they were using three defenders at the back and they were leaving alot of spaces behind. That is why we wanted to utilize those spaces as much as possible so that the fullbacks could be pinned back.”
“I wanted speed because we intended to hit them on the break and at speed. I was looking at the quality of the speed we had. The last two matches we have played, Opoku has been coming in and bringing life into the team.”
Odhiambo also cannibalized his side’s lack of punch and slowness in decision making during transitional situations.
“That was the problem. We had to utilize the areas where we were a little short. Instead, We were grabbing the ball and playing and then falling short. When they lost the ball, they were getting back into shape very quickly.”
Homeboyz will face Al Hilal in the return leg on 26th August, with the winner preceding to play Rwanda’s Rayon Sport.
