Liverpool have made a great start to the new Premier League season and are set to challenge Arsenal and Manchester City for the Premier League title
Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota were on the scoresheet as Liverpool made the perfect start to life under Arne Slot in the Premier League thanks to a 2-0 win over newly promoted Ipswich.
The visitors were keen to start on the front foot in the new season, with a long battle for the Premier League title against Manchester City and Arsenal still to come.
They did just that with two second-half goals from Jota, and then Salah helped them break a stubborn Ipswich side in a comfortable win for the Reds.
How it happened
Ipswich's did not appear shaken in their return to the Premier League after 22 years as they held their own in the first half against the Reds, with neither side creating significant chances, although the hosts managed to fire 13 shots in the opening 45 minutes against Liverpool.
However, the game picked up momentum in the second half, and Diogo Jota broke the deadlock fifteen minutes after the restart, scoring the first goal of the Slot era after converting a delicious pass from Salah.
Just five minutes later, Salah doubled Liverpool's lead, adding to his eight previous opening-day strikes in the Premier League.
After a quick one-two with Dominik Szoboszlai, Salah calmly slotted the ball past Christian Walton in goal for Ipswich, setting a new Premier League record with his ninth opening-day goal.
The Egyptian forward has now recorded more opening-day goals and goal involvements than any other player in Premier League history after scoring or assisting in each of his eight opening fixtures since joining Liverpool.
The victory over Ipswich now sees Liverpool go top of the table on goal difference for the time being, as Slot became the first Reds manager this century to win their first official game in charge of the club.
