'I met him in a hotel' - Former Liverpool boss reveals how he almost signed Super Eagles' Ademola Lookman
The ex-Liverpool boss noted that Ademola Lookman had agreed to terms with his club before he joined a Premier League club.
He lauded the 27-year-old’s quality and referenced their time together at Leicester City when he coached a younger, greener Ademola.
What Rodgers said
Speaking ahead of the game, Rodgers narrated how they went all out to acquire the Nigeria international from Leipzig while he was the coach at the King's Power.
“He’s an absolutely brilliant young player,” Rodgers started. “We stayed in contact and when I was at Leicester, we wanted to bring in another winger and inquired about his availability when he was at Red Bull.
“And he came in and he was absolutely brilliant for me in that season; he was there; he scored some outstanding goals. I remember a great individual goal against Liverpool.”
“When he came to Leicester, you could see everything he was. He leads his life in the right way. Everything is geared towards being the best he can be.
Lookman made the whole world acknowledge his immense quality after scoring a hat-trick in a European final to help La Dea clinch a historic trophy. Rodgers was one of the many tuned in, and he stressed that the former Everton winger's performance did not take him by surprise.
“Watching him in that Europa League final, the goals he scored were not by accident. He’s so balanced. He can shoot up his right foot the same as his left foot.
He’s an absolutely incredible young professional. To see him score the hat-trick in the final last year was absolutely amazing.”
