The Harambee Stars goalkeeper feels the Bafana Bafana legend will be a success in Kenya owing to his vast experience both as a player and coach in South Africa and Europe.

Harambee Stars goalkeeper Ian Otieno has backed South African legend Benni McCarthy to succeed if he lands the Kenya national team job.

McCarthy was last month reported to be close to being appointed as the next Harambee Stars coach to succeed Turkish tactician Engin Firat, who quit in December, after three unsuccessful years in the job.

South Africa’s all-time top scorer is reported to be among over 20 candidates who applied for the vacant position and reports in Kenya and South Africa said a deal has been agreed, with his unveiling set to happen this month.

The possibility of the decorated Bafana Bafana legend taking over Kenya is exciting Otieno, who feels his experience both as a coach and player can revitalise Harambee Stars, who have endured a poor run down the years and missed out on a third successive Africa Cup of Nations.

“I have only read the news in the media. He is a high-profile coach and if this is true, it will be great news for the Kenya national team,” Otieno, who plays for South African side Richards Bay, told the country’s outlet KickOff.

McCarthy remains the only South African to have won the UEFA Champions League, having been part of Jose Moyrinho’s FC Porto team that claimed the 2004 title, and also won league titles with the Portuguese team, as well as with Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam and Orlando Pirates back home.

Having transitioned into coaching, he won the 2028 MTN8 with Cape Town Cit, before finishing second with AmaZulu, their best-ever finish in the South African top flight, and then guided them to the CAF Champions League group stages.

McCarthy’s last job was as attacking coach at Premier League club Manchester United where he worked for two years under Erik ten Hag, being credited for Marcus Rashford’s great form in 2022-23, that saw the English forward score a record 30 goals.

“He played football at the highest level in Europe. He has proved to be a good coach in South Africa. He has a lot of experience both as a player and coach. I believe he will make a good coach for Harambee Stars,” Otieno added about McCarthy, who also played for La Liga side Celta Vigo as well as English clubs Blackburn Rovers and West Ham in the Premier League.
