Harambee Stars striker Jonah Ayunga scored at the wrong end as his own goal denied St Mirren a much-needed win just days after making his maiden Harambee Stars start.

Harambee Stars striker Jonah Ayunga was the scorer of an unfortunate own goal which denied his side St Mirren victory in the Scottish Premiership against Kilmarnock.

St Mirren had taken a seventh-minute when Toyoshi Olusanya broke the deadlock but the visitors were level four minutes later through Marley Watkins.

The hosts would take a 2-1 lead just before halftime when Mark O'Hara scored through a penalty and their task looked like it had been made easier after Joe Wright was sent off in stoppage-time of the opening half, leaving Kilmarnock with 10 men for the rest of the second stanza.

This came after St Mirren coach Stephen Robinson had introduced Ayunga in the 20th minute, having started the striker on bench after his midweek exertions with Harambee Stars.

Mikael Mandron had been booked early and another foul soon after nearly yielded a red card. Sensing danger, Robinson took him off for Ayunga.

However, the Saints failed to take advantage of their numerical strength and instead of extending their lead, they handed their visitors a free point.

With 20 minute to go, Ayunga put through his own net, levelling the scores and ensuring both sides shared the spoils, with St Mirren recording a second straight 2-2 draw.

It spoiled what had been a good week for Ayunga who made his first start for Harambee Stars in Kenya’s 2-1 victory against Namibia in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers last Tuesday.

The striker had been paired with John Avire upfront and although he did not score, he helped stretch the game for Kenya while providing a focal point in attack for coach Engin Firat’s men.

Ayunga is yet to score for his club this season as he continues his comeback after two long injury layoffs in 2023-24.
