Harambee Stars striker John Avire reflects on netting maiden goal for Harambee Stars in his first start for the side during their 2-1 win over Namibia.

Harambee Stars striker John Avire has shared his thoughts on his start and memorable goal for the national team, following Kenya's crucial 2-1 victory against Namibia in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Avire, who scored a stunning freekick to give Kenya the lead, expressed his joy and gratitude for the opportunity while urging Kenyans to be patient with coach Engin Firat's tactics and support the entire squad.

Avire, who plays for Misr El Makasa in Egypt, was visibly delighted as he discussed his first start for the national team.

Reflecting on his performance, he said, "I want to thank God for the game. That was my first start for the national team. We started slowly but grew into the game." His goal, a beautiful strike from the edge of the box, set the tone for Kenya's victory against Namibia’s Brave Warriors in Group J of the AFCON qualifiers.

The striker acknowledged the support he received from both his teammates and coach Firat, adding that the goal has provided the team with much-needed motivation.

"I thank the coach and my teammates for the opportunity that I got. I am happy with the goal because it brings motivation to the team. With hard work, I believe more will come," he stated.

Avire’s performance came at a crucial time for Harambee Stars, who were without their star striker and captain, Michael Olunga, due to injury. Despite Olunga’s absence, Avire reassured fans that the team is well-prepared to fill the void, with quality players ready to step up when needed.

"First, we respect the captain because he is one of the key players in the team, and we hope that next time he will be with us. But we also have quality players in the team who can step up," he explained.

Avire's call for patience and belief extended beyond his own performance. He urged Kenyans to continue supporting both the players and Firat, who has faced criticism following Kenya's goalless draw against Zimbabwe in early September. Firat was criticised for not starting a striker in that match, but he redeemed himself by guiding the team to victory against Namibia just four days later.

"What I can tell Kenyans is to trust every player because anyone who gets the chance wants to give their best and represent the country," Avire said.

“So just be patient with us and the coach's tactics because we believe we will give our best in the upcoming matches."

With Kenya’s victory over Namibia boosting morale, the focus now shifts to their upcoming AFCON qualifier against Cameroon on Monday 7 October. Avire is confident that with continued hard work and unity, the team can achieve great results.

A place in the AFCON finals in Morocco is on the line, and Avire’s impressive first start and goal have only added to the team's belief as they continue their qualifying campaign.
