A controversial social media post following Barry Otieno's resignation as FKF CEO exposes internal tensions within the organization.

Barry Otieno’s resignation as CEO of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) on Monday has ignited a firestorm on social media revealing deep-seated tensions within the organization.

Less than 24 hours after Otieno announced his departure, the official Harambee Stars’ X (formerly Twitter) account posted a harshly critical tweet targeting the former CEO.

In the now-deleted message, an anonymous employee branded Otieno a "toxic bully" and a "top-notch liar," exposing frustrations that had previously been kept under wraps.

The abrupt and severe nature of the tweet shocked followers and stakeholders alike as it suggested significant unrest within the FKF.

The staffer's candid remarks painted a picture of a tumultuous leadership environment contradicting the positive sentiments often expressed in official communications.

In response to the controversial tweet, the Harambee Stars’ official account issued an apology, attributing the offensive message to a potential hack.

"The recent post shared from this account does not align with our views. We have taken immediate action and updated the login credentials. Thank you for your understanding," the apology read.

This statement aimed to mitigate the damage and restore the organization’s reputation but the underlying issues appear to persist.

Sources close to the FKF suggest that employees at Kandanda House had been growing increasingly uncomfortable with Otieno’s leadership style over the past months.

The sudden public outburst on social media seems to confirm these internal tensions which had not been openly addressed until now.

Otieno stepped down after five years as CEO, during which he expressed his gratitude to the football community for their support.

In his farewell statement, he thanked FKF President Nick Mwendwa, delegates, staff, and stakeholders for their collaboration in advancing Kenyan football.

"Together, we have made significant strides in the growth and development of football in Kenya," Otieno remarked,

Otieno’s journey with FKF began as the head of communication before his promotion in 2019, following the resignation of former CEO Robert Muthomi amidst a controversial transfer involving former Sofapaka striker John Avire.

His rise within the federation was marked by both achievements and challenges, ultimately culminating in his recent resignation amid growing speculation about his future.

Rumors are swirling about Otieno’s next move, with suggestions that he or FKF Vice President Doris Petra might be potential candidates for the FKF presidency.

As the current FKF National Executive Committee (NEC) term officially ends on Thursday, October 17, election campaigns are already intensifying across various factions.

The FKF branches' terms concluded last month, and the FKF Electoral Board has been established to oversee the forthcoming election process.
