Linton Maina provided an assist but it was not enough to prevent FC Koln from failing to get all three points against Fortuna Dusseldolf.

Harambee Stars prospect Linton Maina showcased his playmaking brilliance once again, notching his 10th assist of the season for 1. FC Köln in a tense Rhine derby against Fortuna Düsseldorf.

However, his contributions were not enough to secure all three points, as Köln conceded a late penalty in stoppage time to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Coming off a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Magdeburg, Köln were looking to bounce back and strengthen their push for Bundesliga promotion.

The team took charge early on, dominating possession and creating dangerous opportunities. Maina and Dejan Ljubicic tested Düsseldorf goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier in the first half, but both were denied.

The breakthrough finally came in the 67th minute, with Maina exploiting space on the left during a counterattack.

Sprinting into the penalty area, he cut the ball back for Florian Kainz, who calmly slotted it home to give Köln the lead. However, despite their advantage, Köln struggled to close out the match, allowing Düsseldorf to grow into the game.

The visitors' persistence paid off in stoppage time when Isak Johannesson converted a handball penalty in the 90th minute, rescuing a point for Fortuna and delivering a significant setback to Köln's promotion ambitions.

With the draw, Köln slipped to second place in the 2. Bundesliga standings, overtaken by Hamburger SV, who secured a convincing 3-0 win over Kaiserslautern.

Düsseldorf, meanwhile, extended their unbeaten streak to six matches and climbed to fifth place.

Despite the frustration, Maina remains a standout performer in Köln's promotion bid, having also scored three goals this season. With crucial matches ahead, his playmaking ability will be vital as the club looks to reclaim the top spot and secure their return to the Bundesliga.

Eligible to play for Harambee Stars, Maina has already been recognised for his efforts this season, having won FC Koln’s player of the month award in August.
