Harambee Stars put in a spirited fight but could not make their chances pay as Borris Enow's freekick in the 60th minute dented their hopes of sealing AFCON 2025 qualification.
Cameroon secured a vital 1-0 victory over Kenya in their 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium on Monday.
The win keeps the Indomitable Lions at the top of Group J with 10 points, leaving Harambee Stars with an uphill battle in the remaining qualifiers.
But how did the players perform? Pulse Sports rates them in what was a very frustrating afternoon for Engin Firat’s men.
Byrne Omondi - 6
Looked very assured between the sticks with his distribution, communication and command of area, and made some integral saves.
However, he should have done much better with the freekick that he condeeded to Borris Enow in the 60th minute.
Daniel Anyembe -5
Daniel Anyembe played much better compared to the match away in Yaounde, but had to be subbed off at half time, presumably because he picked up an injury.
Joseph Okumu -5
Much more assured display at the back next to his preferred partner Johnstone Omurwa. His ball playing helped create numerous chances, particularly with the range of his long passing from the back.
Johnstone Omurwa - 5
Also looked okay back in the starting line up following injury, but one could argue that his passing from the back would have been better.
Erick Ouma - 6
Looked okay playing left back and made some crucial interceptions, but was kept quiet in attacking situations.
Richard Odada -5
A relatively average display from the Dundee United midfielder. Was inaccurate with some of his passing in certain situations.
Teddy Akumu - 5
Another standard performance, but not the best one either for the midfielder.
John Avire - 7
Industrious performance from John Avire. His aggression allowed Kenya to push further up the field in efforts to try and rattle Cameroon, and for most part, it actually helped create several opportunities.
Duke Abuya - 6
Created a couple of chances, and was intelligent enough to set up Avire after Michael Olunga failed to take advantage of a good chance to put Stars into the lead, but faded off in the second half before being taken off.
Ronney Onyango - 7
Looked lively both going forward and in defence, and even attempted a shot that hit the post. Arguably Kenya’s best player.
Michael Olunga - 4
Missed way too many good chances to give Kenya the advantage. Missed a good chance in the 23rd minute after he had forced a turnover of possession, and then failed to capitalise on the rebound from Ronney Onyango’s shot.
Timothy Ouma - 5
Struggled to influence the game when he came on in the second half, but did give one good chance to Olunga, who took too many touches of the ball allowing the Cameroonian defence back into shape to clear it away.
Jonah Ayunga - N/A
Came on but did not have enough time to influence the outcome of the game.
Amos Nondi - 4
Amos Nondi - 4
Struggled to impact the game in any positive way when he came on.
Alphonce Omija - 6
Combined well with Ronney Onyango when he came on at half time, and even set him up nicely for the shot that hit the bar.
