Harambee Stars interim coach Francis Kimanzi is satisfied with the improvements his team is showing at the Mapinduzi Cup, which gives him belief of a competitive CHAN team.

Harambee Stars interim coach Francis Kimanzi believes his team is slowly picking momentum which will be crucial in their participation in the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024).

Kenya beat Kilimanjaro Stars 2-0 to record their first win in the Mapinduzi Cup on Tuesday, having started with a 1-1 draw against Burkina Faso, a win that showed some improvements especially in defence and attack.

Kimanzi feels the players are getting to grips with his demands and will grow even stronger as the tournament progresses which will bode well for their chances in the CHAN tournament, set to be staged in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania from February 1-28.

“We are still in the very early stages of testing the players and we want to build a team that is very competitive,” Kimanzi told Telecomasia.net.

“We are seeing players showing some very good character and these games in the Mapinduzi Cup are helping in building that better.

“We want to see better mental character and we have an intention of making the team better in every game.”

Kimanzi made several changes to his squad for Tuesday’s match as he continues to test the players at his disposal to gauge their level of preparedness for CHAN and he is so far impressed by what he has seen.

“We have to rotate the squad because this is a select team and every player is ready. We also have to be careful as it is too tough on this artificial turf to play so many games. So, the matches are so intense so you also need to observe the players’ body and rotation is an ideal option to make sure we preserve as many players as possible,” said Kimanzi after Tuesday’s match.

“After every game, we are developing a certain character and that is what we are working and if we develop a competitive character towards the end, we will be rewarded.”

Kenya, who are among 18 nations set to feature in the CHAN 2024 tournament, will learn their fate on January 15 when the draw for the tournament is conducted in Nairobi.
