Ian Otieno leaves Zesco United to join a Premier Soccer League team, strengthening their squad ahead of the new season.

South Africa Premier Soccer League side Richards Bay has officially announced the signing of Kenyan international goalkeeper Ian Otieno.

The acquisition follows Otieno's departure from Zambia Super League side Zesco United.

Otieno, who has been a crucial figure between the posts, brings a wealth of experience to the Natal Rich Boys, having showcased his skills over a five-year stint at Zesco United.

During his tenure in Zambia, Otieno not only solidified his reputation as a dependable goalkeeper but also contributed to the team’s success, including a Zambian Super League title in the 2020/21 season.

"Richards Bay Football Club is thrilled to welcome Goalkeeper Ian Otieno. His proven track record and experience in international competitions, including the CAF Confederation Cup, will be invaluable to our squad," the club stated in their press release.

The move is strategic for Richards Bay, who are bolstering their lineup for the 2024/25 season after securing their spot in the Premier Soccer League through last month's promotion/relegation playoffs.

Otieno is expected to fill the gap left by Jackson Mabokgwane, who recently parted ways with the club.

His experience and consistent performance make him an ideal candidate to lead the team from the back, minimizing their chances of facing another relegation scare.

The 30-year-old goalkeeper has also been a regular member of the Kenya national team, contributing significantly to their triumph in a four-nation tournament in Malawi earlier this year.

His international experience will be a key asset for Richards Bay as they prepare to face the challenges of the upcoming season.

Otieno's competition with former PSL goalkeepers Toaster Nsabata and Mwenya Chibwe at Zesco United has prepared him well for the high stakes of South African football.
