Harambee Stars will need at least a draw against Zanzibar to join Burkina Faso in the final.

Harambee Stars interim head coach, Francis Kimanzi, has outlined his team’s focus and priorities ahead of their crucial encounter against Zanzibar in the ongoing Mapinduzi Cup.

The match, set for Friday, will determine the Stars’ fate in the tournament, with the team needing at least a draw to secure a spot in the final alongside Burkina Faso.

The tournament, hosted in Zanzibar, has provided Kimanzi with a valuable platform to assess his squad and refine strategies as he aims to guide the team through the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in February.

Harambee Stars have displayed resilience and growth in their performances. They began the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Burkina Faso, conceding a late equalizer after a hard-fought game.

The second match against Tanzania showcased their potential, with a commanding 2-0 victory that highlighted the team’s attacking prowess and defensive solidity.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Thursday, Kimanzi expressed optimism about the team’s progress while emphasizing the need to stay focused.

“We have some hope,” Kimanzi said via FKF media. “We have to keep ourselves focused. We must hold onto our passion and engagement in the game as our top priorities.”

The tactician stressed the importance of mental strength, teamwork, and consistency, adding, “When you play every match and see that the players are building confidence, scoring, and, most importantly, reducing risks by not conceding goals, it shows progress. Mentally, the belief is growing stronger, reaching where we want it to be.”

Kimanzi also highlighted the significance of keeping a clean sheet as a cornerstone of the team’s success.

“Every player is playing their role. They’re working together, and the roles are well understood. The foundation of good results is to keep a clean sheet. I’m very happy that tomorrow we go to the match with that in mind.”

The Stars face a formidable opponent in Zanzibar, the tournament hosts, who will have the backing of home fans. However, Kimanzi remains confident that his squad's growing belief and improved performances will see them through.

Burkina Faso, who sealed their place in the final with a 2-0 win over Tanzania on Thursday, currently top the group with seven points. A draw against Zanzibar would be enough for the Stars to advance and set up an exciting finale.

With Kenya’s aspirations riding on this pivotal match, the players and coaching staff will undoubtedly aim to capitalize on their momentum and deliver a performance worthy of a place in the final.
