Harambee Stars: Charles Okwemba on why Engin Firat should be replaced by either Matano, Kimanzi or 'Ghost'

He said the trio can save Kenyan football from the mediocrity shown by the foreign coaches and their proven track record is admirable.

With the future of Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat undecided, former Kenyan international Charles Okwemba has tipped three local coaches to take over the national team duties from the under-fire Turkish gaffer.

The legendary AFC Leopards all-action midfielder believes the trio of Robert Matano, Francis Kimanzi and Jacob 'Ghost' Mulee are ripe enough for the hot seat going by their proven track record.

Stakeholders have voiced their preference for a local coach to take charge of the Stars ahead of the Africa Nations Championships CHAN tournament set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania from February 1-28, 2025.

"FKF should consider employing either Ghost, Matano, or Kimanzi ahead of the CHAN tournament. It will be a big risk and a gamble to go for the tournament with Firat as our head coach," Okwemba told SportsBoom.

"We have seen the three fish out exciting talents from the grassroots and mould them to become top players. Scouting for talent is important as far as the national team is concerned. We haven't seen that from Firat," he added.

Okwemba said Firat has proven incompetent, making it difficult to trust another foreign coach for the job. In 23 matches, Firat has managed seven wins, same number of draws and nine losses as his tenure will be made clearer once the FKF polls are concluded and a new office is in place before the year ends.

"He has proven that he is not the right man for the job. The three coaches have what it takes to lead the team given their experience and knowledge of the players," he reiterated.
