Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga believes local youngsters in Benni McCarthy's recent squad will be the key for the Kenyan national football in 2024 CHAN.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has expressed confidence in the young local-based players selected for Benni McCarthy’s latest squad, backing them to guide Kenya to success in the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in August.

Olunga, who is among the 23-man squad named for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Gambia and Gabon, welcomed the inclusion of emerging talents from the FKF Premier League, emphasizing the importance of their early exposure to international football.

The final squad features five homegrown players: Farouk Shikhalo, Rooney Onyango, Manzur Okwaro, Ben Stanley Omondi, and Mohammed Bajaber.

These players are the only ones eligible to represent Kenya in CHAN, a tournament that exclusively features footballers competing in their respective domestic leagues.

Speaking as Harambee Stars’ departed to Ivory Coast on Tuesday, March 18, for their match against Gambia, Olunga highlighted the importance of integrating young players into the senior national team setup.

"Very positive results to see young players making it into the final squad," Olunga said.

"We have a crop of good players in the local league, many of whom were also named in the provisional squad. It’s really good to see them being integrated into the senior team at an early stage."

With Kenya set to host CHAN 2024 alongside Uganda and Tanzania, Olunga stressed the need for local-based players to gain high-level experience.

“This year, we are hosting CHAN, so we need every player to be tested at the highest level of the national team. Club football and international football are two different setups, and these players need to have that experience. It’s a stage where most of them come and need to harden themselves, grow, and adapt to top-level competition," he explained.

Olunga also praised coach Benni McCarthy for assembling an inclusive squad, which he believes will help nurture the next generation of Kenyan football stars.

"The coach made a well-balanced squad, especially the provisional team, which included many promising young talents. This is a great step in the right direction,” he added.

As Harambee Stars prepare for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, the focus will also be on building a competitive team for CHAN.

The local-based players will be expected to play key roles in both campaigns, ensuring Kenya is well-represented on the continental stage.

With Olunga’s backing and McCarthy’s faith in young talent, Kenyan fans will be hopeful that the next generation of stars can rise to the occasion and deliver success for the national team.
