Grand Slam Track will start in Kingston Jamaica on Friday night and here is everything you need to know about the event and how you can catch the big names in action.

The wait is finally over as the highly-awaited Grand Slam Track is set to gun off in Kingston, Jamaica on Friday April 4 and run until Sunday April 6.

Grand Slam Track is the brainchild of American sprint legend Michael Johnson and it promises to be a major game changer in a sport that has lagged behind when it comes to glamour and earnings.

At Grand Slam Track, there will be 48 challengers and 48 racers competing for the largest prize purse ever distributed in an athletic event in history, being $12.6 million with winners of each race set to pocket $100,000 (Ksh13 million) each.

Kingston is the first stop in the four-leg event that will also take place in Miami, Philadelphia and Los Angeles, and will have eight competitors in each of the 12 groups of events.

At the beginning of each season, four “Racers” per test group form the starting list to compete in the four Slams and will be joined by “Challengers”, also four per event.

Each athlete will compete twice throughout the weekend, and the best combined ranking will determine the Slam champion of each group of events.

At Grand Slam Track, “Racers” were chosen using the following criteria: Global champions and medallists, top 10 ranking, global following and fandon and existing rivalries while “Challengers” were chosen based on: Global champions and medallists, top 20 ranking, global following and fandom and rivalries with racers.

Grand Slam Track has attracted up to 10 Olympics champions among them Gabby Thomas, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Alison Dos Santos, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Cole Hocker, Matthew Hudson-Smith and Marileidy Paulino.

How are Points scored at Grand Slam Track?

As per the Grand Slam Track website, each of the four Grand Slam Track events this year will see chosen athletes compete in two races and earn points as follows:

Winners: 12 points, second place: eight points, third place: six points, fourth place: five points, fifth place: four points, sixth place: three points, seventh place: two points and eighth place: one point.

Athletics lovers in East Africa can watch Grand Slam Track action on SuperSport TV.

On Day 1, the first event will start at 1:42am Kenyan time on Saturday and end at 2:21am while on Day 2, the first event will gun off at 1:42 Sunday morning and end at 2:08am.
