Graham Potter takes the Hammers job after a 21-month exile from management, views it as a chance for redemption.

Graham Potter has finally landed a new job, ending his exile from the dugout.

The 49-year-old makes his return to management 21 months after being sacked by Chelsea in April 2023 following a successful spell as manager of Brighton & Hove Albion.

Potter was announced as West Ham's replacement for Julen Lopetegui on January 9, with the Spaniard the shortest-lived Hammers boss in history. Potter faces some tough decisions if he has to steer the team from mid-table mediocrity to contention for places in European competitions.

Potter, who has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, takes over with the Hammers 14th in the Premier League - seven points above the relegation zone - with just six league wins to their name. Potter was Chelsea's first managerial appointment following Todd Boehly's takeover, but dismissed after less than seven months in charge.

The Blues paid more than £21m in compensation to Brighton, where Potter had impressed after leading the Seagulls to Premier League finishes of 15th, 16th and ninth in a three-year spell. Potter oversaw a record £323m outlay at Stamford Bridge in the 2023 January transfer window, but success did not materialise and he was sacked following an 11th defeat in 31 games.

Potter started his professional managerial career in January 2011 with Swedish club Östersund. He won three promotions and the Svenska Cupen with Östersund, leading them to the 2017–18 UEFA Europa League knockout stage.

He was appointed manager of Championship club Swansea City in June 2018, and moved on to Brighton & Hove Albion of the Premier League a year later. He was also linked with the England job before Thomas Tuchel, his predecessor at Chelsea, was appointed as Gareth Southgate's successor.

Potter's first assignment will be West Ham's FA Cup third-round tie at Aston Villa on January 10, before they return to Premier League action at home to Fulham four days later.
