With just 12 days left until December 31, Kipchumba Murkomen has provided an update over the status of Nyayo and Kasarani Stadia, with the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN) tournament around the corner.
With just 12 days left before the Confederation of African Football (CAF) deadline, Kenya is pushing to finalize renovations at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and Nyayo National Stadium.
These venues are critical for hosting the African Nations Championship (CHAN), which kicks off on February 1, 2025, as well as the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Progress updates from inspection tours
Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen -who has been nominated for a new docket - has been closely monitoring the renovation works. During his December 19 inspection, and in what is likely his last assignment in the office, CS Murkomen shared the latest photos of Kasarani, Nyayo, and Kasarani Annex, offering a glimpse into the progress.
The changing rooms at Kasarani appear fully complete, with the playing field nearing readiness for the continental tournament. CS Murkomen expressed optimism about the pace and quality of work, stating on his X (formerly Twitter) account:
“We are racing against time to make Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and Nyayo National Stadium ready for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments.”
He also praised the workers' dedication, adding:
“The construction workers assured me that even beyond their call of duty, they have a personal desire to deliver the facilities in time for two tournaments for the pride of our nation.”
Despite significant progress, several key areas remain incomplete:
Seating Areas: Installation of seats has begun, but large sections remain unfinished.
Canopy Installation: A new canopy covering the VIP section, a CAF requirement, is in its early stages. Murkomen indicated that extensions to other sections would be completed after CHAN.
Lighting System: CAF has emphasized the importance of adequate lighting, but this is still pending. Delays in transportation forced the government to airlift the lighting system, expected to arrive by Christmas Day.
The urgency of the renovations is heightened by the imminent visit of CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, who arrives in Kenya on December 20. His inspection is part of a regional tour to assess CHAN preparations, which included a stop in Tanzania and will continue to Uganda.
