Gor Mahia’s new Brazilian coach Leonardo Martins Neiva has shared what his philosophy will look like after taking over the K’Ogalo hot seat.

Gor Mahia’s new coach Leonardo Martins Neiva has told his players to expect an intense style of football as he takes over from Johnathan McKinstry.

The Brazilian was unveiled on Monday to replace Northern Irishman McKinstry who left the club to become the Gambia national team coach after back-to-back league wins.

Neiva knows following on McKinstry will not be easy but is counting on his style to deliver not just trophies but exciting football to the Gor Mahia fans.

“My style is very intense even in training. You should train like you are in a game,” said Neiva.

“I am open and flexible but also, we need to be tough. The transition has to be fast, modern football demands speed and tactical organisation.”

The former Yanga and Vipers coach does not also intend to make many changes to what he has found at the club as he is seeking to build on the strong foundations laid by his predecessor.

“We will keep many things of the former coach. He did an amazing job and we cannot just come here and change everything very quickly,” he added.

“We will implement my philosophy little by little but Gor Mahia have their own identity of beautiful football which we should keep.”

Neiva is delighted to be working with one of the most followed club’s in the region and he believes the demanding nature of the K’Ogalo fans will bring the best out of him and his team.

“I enjoy it a lot if the stadium is full and that is why I love to work at the top clubs because with full stadiums, there comes pressure which is good for everyone. Professional football without pressure is not football,” said Neiva.

Neiva, who will be assisted by Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno, who has left Sofapaka, brings a wealth of experience, having kick-started his coaching career as an assistant coach at America CF in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2007.

His coaching journey has seen him navigate roles in North America, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and Africa.

Neiva's first move to Africa came in 2008 when he joined South Africa's Platinum Stars as an academy coach, a position he held until 2009.

Following a brief return to Brazil with Bonsucesso-RJ, he took charge of the youth side of Yadanarborn FC, where he played a crucial role in developing young talents who would later represent Brazil at the U-20 level.

In 2011, Neiva became the head coach of Rakhine United in the Myanmar National League, where at 34, he was the youngest coach in the league.

His success continued in 2013 when he returned to Brazil to coach Associacao Atletica Francana before moving to Tanzania's Yanga in 2014.

In Tanzania, he achieved significant success, winning both the Tanzanian Super Cup and the 2014/15 Premier League title.

His most recent position in Africa was with Uganda Premier League side Vipers SC where he was relieved of his duties in December after just six months in charge.
