Gor Mahia Transfer News: K’Ogalo release long-serving duo as squad shakeup begins

Gor Mahia have opted against renewing the contracts of two of their longest-serving players, option to free up space for new additions to the squad in the January transfer window

Gor Mahia’s long-serving players Ernest Wendo and Philemon Otieno have departed the club following the expiry of their contracts.

The two players have formed an integral part of a successful Gor Mahia team over the years but have now been released after their deals expired at the end of December.

Both Wendo and Otieno had become bit-part players and K’Ogalo saw no need to extend their deals, opting to free up space for new additions to the squad, in the January transfer window.

Wendo joined Gor Mahia in 2015 and is one of the most decorated players in the local league, having claimed seven FKF Premier League titles in nine years, drawing level with club legend George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo.

Otieno, meanwhile, linked up with K’Ogalo in 2017 from the now defunct Ushuru FC, claiming six league titles, earning call-ups to the national team Harambee Stars, including featuring in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, and leaves the club having served as the captain.

The two players have seen their game time significantly reduced in the last one-and-a-half seasons with other options preferred in their positions.

Wendo had fallen down the pecking order in central midfield with Lawrence Juma and Enock Morrison preferred ahead of him while Otieno was behind Ronney Onyango and Paul Ochuoga at right-back.

Gor Mahia are expected to be busy in the midseason transfer market after club secretary general Sam Ocholla confirmed that they are set to release up to five players this month.

“We have identified five players to be let go. Those whose contracts are coming to an end we are not keen to renew them while those still on contracts we will be sending them on loan to other clubs so that they can get playing time,” Ocholla told Mozzart Sport last weekend.

Right-back is an area Gor Mahia are likely to strengthen in light of Otieno’s departure and the uncertain future of Ronney Onyango, with Fredrick Alushula, who recently left Kariobangi Sharks, and Sofapaka’s Baron Ochieng mentioned to be among their targets.
