A major team has withdrawn from the 2024 CECAFA Kagame Cup reducing competition for Gor Mahia and other participating clubs.

Gor Mahia will miss a chance to face Nyasa Big Bullets in the 2024 CECAFA Kagame Cup as the Malawian club has declined the invitation to participate in the tournament.

The competition, scheduled to take place from July 6 to 22 in Zanzibar and Tanzania, will proceed without Bullets, who were invited as one of the guest teams alongside TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambian Super League champions Red Arrows.

In an interview on Thursday, Bullets Chief Administration Officer Albert Chigoga confirmed the team's decision to prioritize domestic competitions and the CAF Champions League over the Cecafa Kagame Cup.

"We have not been doing well in the TNM Super League; so, we want to focus on domestic competitions and the CAF Champions League. We believe the decision is in the best interest of the team,” Chigoga stated as per The Times.

This marks the second major withdrawal from this year's CECAFA Cup, with TP Mazembe also opting out as they are currently on an off-season break.

The CECAFA Kagame Cup is still expected to feature notable teams such as APR from Rwanda, Gor Mahia from Kenya, and Tanzanian giants Simba SC and Young Africans, among others.

The draw for the tournament is scheduled to take place next week.

Nyasa Big Bullets last participated in the CECAFA Cup in 2021, where they finished as runners-up after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Uganda's Express FC under the then assistant coach Peter Mponda.

This year's focus on the CAF Champions League, which is set to begin in August, underscores Bullets' commitment to improving their standing in continental competitions.
