The defender expresses gratitude for his first Harambee Stars call-up for the Russia friendly, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Gor Mahia right-back Rooney Onyango is reveling in joy after receiving his first-ever call-up to join the Harambee Stars squad currently camping in Turkey.

The 22-year-old defender is anticipated to bring a burst of fresh energy and skill to the national team as they brace for an international friendly against Russia.

In the camp, Onyango joins a group of seasoned and novice players, diligently preparing for the forthcoming friendly match while keeping a keen eye on the approaching 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

“This is an optimal opportunity to represent my country, and I'm thankful to the technical bench for the call-up. I commit to delivering my best,” an enthusiastic Onyango mentioned.

The young footballer sees this as a significant milestone, crucial for boosting his confidence and aiding in realising his dreams.

“Being part of the national team is a significant platform, enhancing my morale and furthering my ambitions. With a target to play in Europe, this experience is invaluable in my professional journey,” he concluded.

Having been a consistent starter for Gor Mahia this season, Onyango’s stellar performances have not gone unnoticed. The Passenga High School alumnus has not only played in all six matches this season but also completed 90 minutes in five of them.

His noteworthy display in these games has remarkably led to the sidelining of the club’s captain, Philemon Otieno, underscoring Onyango's growing importance to the team.

“I thank God and express my appreciation to the technical bench for the opportunity provided to me by the national team. I eagerly anticipate giving my best performance,” Onyango stated, reflecting on the opportunity laid before him.

Vincent Harper of Exeter City, participating in England’s League One, is another fresh face in the squad, joining Onyango in the 22-man ensemble preparing diligently for the impending match and the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

For Harambee Stars, the friendly match against Russia is not just another game; it is a vital preparation ground for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers slated to begin in November.

The team has been drawn in Group F and is set to face formidable opponents, including the likes of Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Seychelles, Burundi, and their first challenge, Gabon, comes on November 13.

In their recent friendlies, the Kenyan national team showcased a mixed bag of results, suffering a 1-0 defeat to South Sudan but securing a commendable 2-1 victory over the 2022 World Cup hosts, Qatar.
