Gor Mahia are considering hosting AFC Leopards away from Nairobi if the next Mashejei derby takes place with Nyayo and Kasarani Stadium not available.

Gor Mahia are exploring the possibility of hosting their Mashemeji derby at either Siaya Stadium or Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu.

K’Ogalo seem to be preparing ahead after watching rivals AFC Leopards fail to find a suitable venue to host the first installment of the derby this season after Sunday’s match was cancelled.

Ingwe were denied access to the Nyayo Stadium by Sports Kenya owing to the renovations currently going on at the facility as Kenya prepares for the Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) tournament.

The Kasarani Stadium is also not available as it undergoes upgrades for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and this left Leopards with no option but to cancel the match given its risky nature.

Keen not to be found in the same fix, Gor Mahia are looking elsewhere to host Leopards when they will be the home team for the next Mashemeji derby.

"We will take the match either to Kisumu or Siaya if Nyayo and Kasarani will not be ready. Plans to have the team play at Siaya during the commissioning of the facility are at an advanced stage," Gor Mahia vice chairman Francis Wasuna told Mozzartsport.

Wasuna says Leopards’ dilemma was a wakeup call to sports stakeholders in the country in regards to infrastructure development with an overreliance on state-owned facilities coming back to bite.

"Much as we are disappointed with the postponement of the game, we understand that Leopards did not have an alternative unlike us. Planning for the derby requires a lot of effort, resources and time,” he added.

As per the current fixtures, Gor Mahia are scheduled to host Leopards on April 6, 2025 but the matches are subject to changes, meaning the match could be played earlier or later.

There is hope, however, that both Nyayo and Kasarani will be opened by early next year.

The derby has never been played away from Nairobi and it is still not known if the two venues in Siaya and Kisumu will meet requirements for a high-risk match like the derby.
