Gor Mahia address the future of Ronney Onyango as the highly anticipated Mashemeji derby looms.

Gor Mahia right back Ronney Onyango is set to return to Norway following the conclusion of the March FIFA International break.

The all-action defender has been undergoing trials with second-tier club Sogndal Football and will miss the Mashemeji derby match  against AFC Leopards on March 30.

Gor Mahia Vice Chairman Francis Wasuna confirmed that the athletics defender is set to return to Europe in the course of the week to finish his month-long program.

Wasuna added that Onyango is welcomed back at Gor Mahia should he fail the trials. "Onyango will fly back to Norway to finalize his trials. We had agreed that he would try his luck with the interested clubs for a period of time of one month only. This means he will not be available for the Mashemeji Derby," Wasuna told Mozzart Sports.

There was hope that Onyango would be available for the derby at the Nyayo Stadium but that won't be the case. Onyango played full minutes in the two Harambee Stars 2026 World Cup qualifier matches.

He started and completed 90 minutes against The Gambia in Abidjan in the 3-3 draw  and the 2-1 loss against Gabon in Nairobi. The energetic fullback has made the position his own for both club and country and is always reliable because of his fitness.

Onyango almost joined Tanzanian giants Singida Black Stars in January but the deal for the 23-year-old did not materialise. Despite his absence Gor Mahia have adequate options in his position.

Coach Sinica Mihic is spoilt for choice with both Paul Ochuoga and Philemon Otieno vying for a starting role. Gor Mahia are third in the 18-team league with 42 points, three behind leaders Kenya Police although they have a game in hand.

Gor Mahia have won the last two editions of the league title and are aiming to win it for a third time in a row. K'Ogallo are the record champions having laid their hands on the gong for 21 times.
