Chaos erupted during Gor Mahia's elections at Nyayo Stadium as police fired teargas, disrupting the AGM and voting process.

Police have fired teargas to disperse rowdy crowds at the Nyayo National Stadium during Gor Mahia Football Club’s much-anticipated general elections held on Sunday.

The dramatic scenes saw fans, delegates, and candidates caught up in confusion as chaos disrupted the proceedings, forcing many to flee for safety.

The elections, held concurrently with the club's Annual General Meeting (AGM), were meant to mark a new chapter for the club following a directive by the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT).

The tribunal had in January ordered Gor Mahia to conduct fresh elections within 90 days indicating the need to align the process with the club's 2019 constitution.

However, what was expected to be a routine democratic exercise turned into a fracas.

Eyewitnesses reported scuffles among supporters of rival camps, with accusations of electoral malpractice and irregularities flying across the stadium before police intervened.

“I, Joseph Ogidi, wish to officially announce my withdrawal from the race for the position of Secretary General at Gor Mahia Football Club,” read a statement released by the popular Radio Jambo as per MozzartSport.

The veteran radio personality and musician cited undisclosed reasons for his withdrawal. He had already launched an extensive campaign and paid the nomination fees, making his exit a significant development in the heated race.

Gidi’s departure now leaves incumbent Sam Ocholla to face off with Nicanor Arum in a two-horse race for the Secretary-General’s seat.

The club’s longtime chairman Ambrose Rachier is also seeking to extend his 17-year reign.

If successful, Rachier will lead the club until 2029. Other key contenders in the polls include outgoing club treasurer Dolphina Onyango.

Earlier in April, the Sports Disputes Tribunal issued a ruling in favor of petitioners who had challenged the high nomination fees set by the club’s Electoral Board.

The tribunal directed that the fees be lowered to allow broader participation, a move seen as a win for aspiring candidates who had been locked out.

Electoral Board chairperson Gichu Wahome released the official election roadmap on April 2 detailing the rules and procedures to be followed during the polls.
