Gor Mahia coach Sinisa Mihic has shed light on why striker Benson Omala continues to be unavailable for the team despite being fit and training with the team.

Gor Mahia head coach Sinisa Mihic has provided an update on the availability of striker Benson Omala, shedding light on why the goal-poacher remains absent despite his return to training with the team.

Omala, who emerged as the top scorer in last season’s FKF Premier League with 19 goals, played a pivotal role in securing Gor Mahia’s record-extending 21st league title.

However, at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, the lethal forward sought opportunities abroad, signing with Lebanese side Al Safa.

Unfortunately, Omala's stint in Lebanon was short-lived, as reports indicate his contract was terminated due to unpaid wages and a strained relationship with the club.

Following his premature exit from Al Safa, Omala returned to Kenya and was seen training with Gor Mahia, fueling speculation that he was set to rejoin the squad for their title defense.

His presence in training suggested that he could play a key role in the team’s campaign, especially ahead of the highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby against AFC Leopards.

However, during a the AFC Leopards vs Gor Mahia pre-match press conference on March 28, Mihic confirmed that Omala’s return to competitive action remains uncertain.

The Croatian tactician revealed that the club is still working on resolving the necessary paperwork to facilitate his eligibility.

“He trained with us, but we’re still waiting for papers,” Mihic stated.

The coach admitted that he is unsure whether Omala will be able to feature for Gor Mahia this season, as discussions with his former parent club continue.

“I don’t know. The rules, you know, about the transfer window,” he added, indicating the complexities surrounding the process.

Despite the uncertainty, Mihic remains open to the striker’s return and emphasized that the club is keen on supporting Omala during this period.

“I have players, so I work with them. He (Omala) joined us because he’s our ex-player. We want to help him, of course, to be fit. He deserves it. I would like to have him in the team, but if he signs soon—if the paperwork comes—it will be fantastic. If not, it’s not a problem.”

Omala’s availability would have been a major boost for Gor Mahia, particularly with doubts lingering over the fitness of go-to-man Austin Odhiambo ahead of the Mashemeji Derby at Nyayo Stadium.

Given Omala’s history of delivering in big matches, his presence would have strengthened Gor Mahia’s attacking options against their arch-rivals.

For now, both the Gor Mahia and its fans will have to wait and see if the necessary clearances are secured in time for the forward’s much-anticipated return to competitive action.
