Rachier seeks a final term as Gor Mahia chairman, facing election disputes, court battles and strong opposition from treasurer Dolphina Odhiambo.
If sugar is the sweetest ingredient in tea, then longevity in leadership is the trademark of Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier.
Since 2008, he has been at the helm of the most successful club in Kenya, steering it through victories and turbulence. Now, as the club heads into a crucial election period, Rachier is once again on the campaign trail, seeking what he terms as his final term in office.
Rachier insists that he meets all the conditions set in the club’s 2019 constitution to vie for another term.

The long serving football administrator believes that the 2020 elections, which were conducted under the same constitution, give him the right to seek re-election for a second four-year stint under the current framework.
“Our constitution is very clear. It allows those who vied and won in the 2020 elections to vie for a second four-year term. I will present myself as a candidate for the top seat,” Rachier said in an interview with Citizen Digital.
However, his tenure has not been without controversy. In January 2025, the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) ordered Gor Mahia to conduct elections within 90 days after ruling that the current executive had overstayed in office. The tribunal found that the officials, including Rachier, had exceeded their mandate, which was set to expire on August 8, 2024.

Benson Omala: The contract nightmare keeping him away from Gor Mahia
Benson Omala is still in the dark where he will be playing next after recent release by Al Safa SC and Gor Mahia have clarified why they won't engage him for now.
The legal battle was ignited by Bernard Agwera Omollo, who sued Rachier, his deputy Francis Wasuna, Secretary Sam Ocholla, and Treasurer Dolphina Odhiambo for failing to conduct elections as required by the club’s constitution.
Rachier maintains that the delay in elections was not intentional. He claims that the club had planned to conduct elections last year but was halted by a court injunction filed by a member.
“We had convened an AGM in September 2024 to plan for elections. Unfortunately, a member went to the SDT to challenge the office that was to discuss the way forward regarding elections. That is what caused the delay to date since the matter has been before court,” he explained.
To further complicate matters, Rachier himself moved to court, seeking more time before elections could be conducted. His argument is that holding elections within the 90-day period as directed by the tribunal would disrupt Gor Mahia’s league campaign.
“I only went to court to request a postponement of the election dates to June. This allowed us to concentrate on our quest to win our 22nd title. The verdict will be out on March 11,” Rachier stated.

AFC Leopards chairman Dan Shikanda explodes as Kasarani renovations force Mashemeji derby into uncertainty
Shikanda has proposed moving the Mashemeji Derby to Tanzania or Uganda due to the unavailability of a suitable venue in Kenya.
Should the court insist on the earlier 90-day directive, Rachier has confirmed that the club will comply and hold elections as ordered.
Meanwhile, the race for Gor Mahia’s top seat is heating up, with current treasurer Dolphina Odhiambo throwing her hat in the ring.
Unlike previous elections where Rachier’s dominance remained largely unchallenged, Odhiambo has emerged as a strong contender, determined to take over the leadership of the record Kenyan champions.

Benson Omala is still in the dark where he will be playing next after recent release by Al Safa SC and Gor Mahia have clarified why they won't engage him for now.
Rachier’s long reign has been marked by both achievements and challenges.
Under his leadership, Gor Mahia has enjoyed a period of dominance in the FKF Premier League, winning multiple titles and participating in continental tournaments.
However, financial instability, wrangles over election processes and governance concerns have also been part of his legacy.
