Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier has cited the lack of quality in the Kenyan Premier League for his team’s poor performance in the CAF Champions League.

Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier has blamed the low standards of the Kenyan Premier League for their struggles in the CAF Champions League.

K'Ogalo's continental journey ended at the preliminary round after a 6-0 aggregate loss to Egyptian giants Al Ahly, in what was another early exit for a Kenyan side.

Gor Mahia went out after Kenya Police were also handed a 3-1 defeat by another Egyptian side in Zamalek at the same stage in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Rachier feels Kenyan teams have no chance in continental competitions as long as the standards of the local league are not improving.

“The federation (FKF) is running a league that lacks quality. You win the league, but you don’t get the competition needed to match continental football,” Rachier told Passion Sports.

“Instead of focusing on improving the standards of the league, they’re busy pursuing vendettas against clubs.

“I hope the forthcoming elections in December will usher in a new leadership capable of transforming the league, even if it means going back to the days it was managed by the Kenyan Premier League Limited.”

Rachier also took issue with the sporting facilities in Kenya, who he says are not fit for purpose, while urging community clubs to quickly change their governance model if they need to attract top players that will make them competitive in Africa.

“The government should do something about this [facilities]. Machakos Stadium, for example, is like a school playing ground. We cannot develop sports in such conditions,” added Rachier, who is pushing for a corporate governance model that will allow the club to bring in more resources from external investors.

“This is a discussion we’re currently having. In our agenda for the Annual General Meeting, we proposed turning the club into a Limited Liability Company, but unfortunately someone went to court to stop the process.”

Gor Mahia will now turn their focus to the league with their first match scheduled on Saturday against Mathare United.
