Since 1985, Gor Mahia begins their quest for another CECAFA title under new coach Martins Neiva amidst challenges and high hopes.

Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) champions Gor Mahia are set to commence their pursuit of a fourth CECAFA Kagame Cup title in a challenging match against the Zambian side Red Arrows.

The game is scheduled for Wednesday night at the Azam Complex in Chamazi, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

This marks a significant moment for Gor Mahia as they aim to rekindle their past glory, having last secured the CECAFA title back in 1985 with a victory over AFC Leopards.

This encounter will not only be a test of strategy and skill but also a debut for Gor Mahia’s new head coach, Martins Neiva.

Appointed last week to replace former coach Johnathan McKinstry, Neiva expressed both enthusiasm and caution ahead of his first official match.

“I had a short training session, but I'm satisfied with the players' feedback. Tomorrow (Wednesday), we're going to do our best," Neiva stated.

The Zambian opponents are not to be underestimated as coach Neiva highlighted the challenges posed by Red Arrows, describing them as “very strong, especially in terms of physical play.

They excel in physical contact during the game.” This upfront and powerful style could pose significant hurdles for Gor Mahia as they adjust under their new coach’s leadership.

The match also serves as a precursor to both teams' campaigns in the prestigious CAF Champions League, making it an excellent opportunity for sharpening skills and team cohesion.

Despite missing key midfielder Austin Odhiambo, Gor Mahia will be bolstered by the addition of three new players: Samuel Kapen, Chris Pius Akena, and Gedeon Bendeka.

On the other side Red Arrows under the guidance of coach Chisi Mbewe are optimistic about their chances.

In an interview, Mbewe commented on the broader benefits of the CECAFA tournament.

“Tournaments like CECAFA can foster team cohesion and bonding, which is crucial for team spirit and morale, especially when transitioning between different competitions," he noted.

However, the Zambian side is not without its challenges as injuries have slightly weakened their squad, with notable absences including team captain Benedict Chepeshi and key players Chitiya Mususu, Twiza Chaibela, and Zephenia Phiri.

Nevertheless, the return of striker Albert Kangwanda, albeit brief before he returns to his parent club Al Hilal FC of Sudan, is expected to give Red Arrows a significant uplift.

In the backdrop of this intense showdown another group tie will see Al Hilal of Sudan facing Telecom FC of Djibouti at the same venue earlier in the evening adding to the football fever in Dar es Salaam.
