Gor Mahia and Kenya Police are set to earn big from their participation in the Champions League and Confederation Cup after CAF announced prize money for preliminary round teams.

Gor Mahia and Kenya Police are set for a major financial boost from their participation in inter-club Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions.

Gor Mahia and Police are both set to begin their continental assignments at the preliminary round this weekend, the law enforcers hosting Ethiopian Coffee in the Confederation Cup, while K’Ogalo play away to Al Merreikh Juba of South Sudan on Sunday.

For the first time in the CAF competitions, there will be prize money from the preliminary round where all teams starting at this stage will be awarded $50,000 (Ksh6.5 million) each.

“The significant step by CAF addresses the long-standing concerns from Clubs on the travelling and logistical costs associated escalating playing in club continental football,” CAF said in a statement on its website.

“This financial boost for preliminary round participants complements the existing prize money structure for later stages of both competitions.

“This move is expected to incentivize more clubs to participate in continental competitions and raise the overall standard of club football in Africa.”

Previously, the cash rewards only began at the group stage with Kenyan teams missing out as most of their continental campaigns ended at the preliminary round.

There is further motivation this season as CAF has also increased financial rewards for teams that make it to the group stage.

Group stage qualification will now attract a minimum of $700,000 (Ksh90 million) for Champions League teams while $400,000 (Ksh51 million) will go to Confederation Cup teams.

It means Gor Mahia could walk away with at least Ksh90 million if they negotiate their way past the preliminary round and make it to the group although K’Ogalo will face holders and Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the second preliminary round if the edge out Al Merreikh Juba, while Police could pocket at least Ksh51 million if they reach the group stage.

Champions League quarter-finalists will be rewarded $900,000 (Ksh116 million), $1.2 million (Ksh155 million) going to semi-finalists as runners up pocket $2 million (Ksh258 million). Champions League winners will go home with $4 million (Ksh516 million).

Confederation Cup quarter-finalists will each take home $550,000 (Ksh71 million), semi-finalists $750,000 (Ksh97 million), runners-ups $1 million (Ksh129 million) as winners pocket $2 million (Ksh258 million).
