Sylvester Owino was among the Gor Mahia players that landed in angered fans' hot soup after featuring in unsanctioned friendly matches for A Mosquito FC.

Gor Mahia defender Sylvester Owino has assured fans that he will refrain from participating in unsanctioned friendly matches during the season, following the controversy that recently engulfed the club.

The drama unfolded after several K’Ogalo players featured in an unauthorized match, an incident that coincided with the team's disappointing performances on the pitch.

The saga centered around an amateur side, A Mosquito FC, which was linked to the incident but has denied deliberately involving Gor Mahia players.

The unsanctioned match sparked outrage after four Gor Mahia players—Paul Ochuoga, Chris Ochieng, Enoch Morrison, and Musa Masika—were dropped from the squad by then-coach Leonardo Neiva before the team’s 2-1 loss to Nairobi City Stars.

Meanwhile, Owino, Rooney Onyango, and Austin Odhiambo, who also participated in the match, escaped similar repercussions as they were away representing Kenya in the 2024 CHAN qualifiers.

Speaking on the Tiki Taka show, Owino expressed regret for his involvement, emphasizing the importance of honoring contractual obligations.

“It brought problems. Being one of the players that featured, local games take place but we are employed and under contracts, and those contracts have clauses that are not supposed to be broken,” he admitted. “We were playing for fun, but they reprimanded us, and I am sure something like that will never happen again.”

Meanwhile Owino remains focused doing his best for the club and individually in order to earn opportunities abroad in future.

“If those opportunities come our way, we will sure take advantage of them, but at the moment, I have to keep working hard for the team and I am sure eventually, they will come,” he added.

Gor Mahia’s struggles and fan discontent

Gor Mahia has endured a challenging start to the season, sitting 12th in the league standings with just eight points after six games.

The team is currently on a four-game winless streak, a slump that has frustrated fans. In the last three matches, fan discontent has spilled over, with supporters either demanding to confront players or physically challenging technical bench members, including Neiva, who has since been dismissed.

One of the grievances among fans has been the sight of Gor Mahia players turning out for lesser-known teams on free weekends. Neiva, before his departure, pointed to such activities as a contributing factor to the team's poor form.
