2019 Ballon d'Or winner Megan Rapinoe believes her tragic injury is proof that God does not exist.
While tragedy might lead people to a deeper spiritual connection, for USWNT legend Megan Rapinoe, it serves as proof that a higher power does not exist.
The 2019 Ballon d’Or winner had earlier announced her retirement, and in what was meant to be the final game of her career, she suffered an Achilles injury and was substituted only six minutes into proceedings.

Megan Rapinoe misses crucial penalty, breaks down in tears as USWNT crash out
Megan Rapinoe wept uncontrollably as the USWNT crashed out of the FIFA Women's World Cup.
This followed another misfortune in her final tournament game for the USWNT, where she missed a penalty in the quarter-final spot-kick shootouts against Sweden at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
What Rapinoe said
The NWSL final between Reign FC and Gotham was meant to be Rapinoe’s crowning moment, but she sustained an injury early in the game, and her team lost 2-1. She then went on to state that her misfortune is evidence that God does not exist.
"For sure, I tore my Achilles," she said, per talkSport.
"I mean, f***ing yeeted my Achilles in the sixth minute in my last game ever in the literal championship game. I guess I just rode until the wheels came right off! Now I'm just a NARP, a normal-ass regular person, having to do rehab which is f***ing devastating.
“You gotta find the silver lining and the dark humour, and that's just who I am as well. That's life; it's part of the game. I was feeling really good before the game, wasn't feeling tight or wasn't having calf issues or anything. You don't always get to have the perfect ending.
"I'm not a religious person or anything and if there was a God, this is proof that there isn't. This is f***ed up."
