Milan will be without the suspended Mike Maignan against Juventus, as well as his injured deputy Marco Sportiello and must now decide who will play in goal for them

AC Milan’s Olivier Giroud could be forced to reprise his role in goal for the Rossoneri when they take on Juventus this weekend after the club’s second-choice goalkeeper, Marco Sportiello, suffered an injury during training.

Milan facing goalkeeper crisis after Sportiello injury

The French striker was forced to deputise for first-choice goalkeeper Mike Maignan after his compatriot got sent off during Milan’s 1-0 win over Genoa, and gave a good impression between the sticks, making the Serie A Team of the Week in the process.

With Maignan set to miss the Juventus game thanks to the suspension gained from the sending-off against Genoa, second-choice goalkeeper Sportiello was set to start between the sticks for Milan against Juventus but got injured during the week.

Milan announced Sportiello’s injury in a club statement, which read, "Marco Sportiello has suffered an injury of the medial twin of the left calf. The keeper will have to observe a rest period of 10 days, after which the evolution will be evaluated with a new MRI."

Milan consider Mirante option

In the absence of the first and second-choice goalkeepers, and with Giroud unlikely to fancy another run in goal, Milan will have to turn to third-choice goalkeeper Antonio Mirante, who has not started a competitive game during his two-year spell at the club.

The Italian goalkeeper, who joined Milan from Roma in 2021, last started a game in competitive football for the Gialorossi in the UEFA Europa League against Manchester United that same year.

When Milan come up against fellow title-challengers Juventus, they could be forced to depend on the 40-year-old or give a debut to 19-year-old Lapo Nava, who has already been on the bench for the Rossoneri three times this season
