WPL: Ghost Mulee's Gaspo Women reclaim top spot

Festus Chuma 18:30 - 30.04.2023

Vihiga Queens and Gaspo are engaged in a thrilling contest in the women's division.

Gaspo Women FC Sunday returned to the Football Kenya Federation Women's Premier League summit with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Bunyore Starlets at GEMS Cambridge International Schools grounds.

The hosts started on the front foot and dictated terms in the opening stages by putting pressure on the visiting defence.

However, they failed to keep their door shut, and they crumbled from Bunyore's attack in the 13th minute when Airin Madalina made it 1-0.

Gaspo settled better in the game after going ahead, but they lacked the urgency going forward, as they found themselves absorbing the pressure and playing on transitions.

Jacob Mulee's charges had the attacking momentum towards the end of the first stanza as they put Bunyore under pressure, but they were unable to trouble the opponent's goalkeeper.

The game opened up after the restart as Gaspo pushed their numbers forward, and their efforts were rewarded in the 48th minute with a first-time strike from Uganda international Adrine Birungi.

Ten minutes later, Elizabeth Wambui made it 2-1 with an easy tap-in into the back of the net after Bunyore's backline failed to clear the ball from the danger zone.

Emily Andayi put the game to bed for Gaspo in the 71st minute when she fired an unstoppable strike at the near post from a well-calculated delivery from Wambui.

Elsewhere, Ulinzi Starlets continued their unbeaten run in the second leg when they beat Nakuru City Queens 3-0 in a match played at Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology.

Fasila Adhiambo, Airo Mercy, and Neddy Atieno scored the three goals that ensured Starlets maintained pressure on log leaders Gaspo and second-place Vihiga Queens.

Meanwhile, Wadadia walloped former champions Thika Queens 4-1 in a match played at Stima Club in Ruaraka.

Linda Okoside scored for the hosts, while Judy Mukhwana, Monica Nyakoa, Jackline Chesang, and Laura Shitawa scored a goal each for the Mumias-based outfit.

In the other match played on Sunday, Zetech Sparks handed Kayole Starlet a 4-1 defeat at Camp Toyoyo to boost their relegation fight.

Puren Alukwe netted a brace, with Violet Otineo and Fidu scoring the other goals in a win that has pushed Sparks to the seventh spot.
