Around 90% of German fans called for Kai Havertz to be dropped by Germany

German football fans are expressing strong opinions about Arsenal star Kai Havertz' performance in the ongoing Euro 2024.

A recent poll conducted by BILD, which surveyed nearly 140,000 supporters, revealed that 90% of respondents believe the Arsenal star should be dropped from the starting line-up.

Germany fans want Borussia Dortmund star over Havertz

The fans polled believe that Borussia Dortmund’s Niclas Fullkrug, who has shown a more traditional number nine's effectiveness, would be an upgrade to Havertz, and should be handed the starting spot.

Despite scoring a penalty in Germany’s 5-1 win over Scotland, Havertz has failed to impress in subsequent matches, drawing blanks and managing only one effort on target during the 1-1 draw with Switzerland.

Germany's manager, Julian Nagelsmann, also acknowledged the fans' sentiments and the performances of both players, but made no assurances over the starting berth, telling BILD, “Fulle [Fullkrug] has a chance to start, but Kai has the same chances.”

Germany find out Round of 16 opponents

Germany will face Denmark, who were runners-up from in Group C after three consecutive draws against Slovenia, England, and Serbia.

The match will be played in Dortmund on Saturday, meaning that Fullkrug will be playing at his club’s home ground, giving more impetus to the idea that he should start the match against the Danes.

Fullkrug has scored 13 goals in 19 appearances for Germany so far, four fewer than Havertz, who has already played 49 times for the national team, but ultimately the decision lies with Naglesmann as he must also consider how each forward’s style of play affects his other teammates.
