George Baldock died just hours before Greece's match against England and it has now been confirmed what caused his demise.

The family of George Baldock, the former Sheffield United star and Greek international who passed away on Wednesday, has issued a statement confirming the results of his post-mortem examination, which revealed that he tragically drowned.

Baldock was found in the swimming pool of his villa in Glyfada, Athens, on October 9, 2024, after concerns were raised by his wife, who was in England and unable to reach him.

Revealing an emotional tribute, the family expressed their heartbreak over the sudden loss of their beloved George.

“We are devastated by the passing of our cherished son, fiancé, father, brother, and friend. The post-mortem has confirmed that he drowned while swimming in the pool at his home,” they stated.

The family went on to describe Baldock’s vibrant personality and the joy he brought to those around him.

“George was a remarkable individual whose enthusiasm for life was infectious. He touched the hearts of many, both on and off the pitch,” they shared. “His spirit will live on in our memories and through his beautiful son.”

In a touching note, they also acknowledged the outpouring of support from fans and friends.

“We are incredibly grateful for the love and tributes being shared in George’s memory. It has been both uplifting and heart-wrenching to read how he impacted so many lives,” the statement continued.

A moment of silence was held in Baldock’s honour at Wembley Stadium during the UEFA Nations League match between England and Greece, where both teams paid their respects to the fallen athlete.

As his family navigates this devastating time, they have requested privacy to grieve the loss of a beloved husband and father.

“We ask for your understanding as we begin to process our grief. George was truly one of a kind, and he will be deeply missed,” they concluded.
