The Women’s Premier League leaders maintained their winning ways against the defending champions in an entertaining clash in Thika
Football Kenya Federation Women’s Premier League leaders Gaspo Women showed that they mean business as far as the title is concerned when they beat defending champions Thika Queens 4-2 at Thika Stadium on Wednesday.
Gaspo had to come from behind to secure the win, however, after Stella Adhiambo broke the deadlock for the hosts with a fifth-minute goal before the visitors drew level courtesy of Mutukiza Wambui in the 25th minute.
Diana Wacera then extended Gaspo’s lead four minutes later for a 2-1 lead at the break. The visitors took just four minutes after the restart to add the third goal, with Lydia Akoth finding the target, but Pauline Musungu replied for Thika a minute later. Wambui then completed her brace, scoring Gaspo’s fourth 13 minutes from time.
The victory sees Gaspo accumulate 46 points from 19 matches, pushing them closer to their maiden league title with three games remaining.
It was Thika’s ninth loss this season and back-to-back, having fallen to Vihiga Queens last weekend, which saw coach Fredrick Majani get the sack. It shows how difficult a task it will be for new tactician Benter Achieng, who took over from Majani.
Meanwhile, second-placed Vihiga kept pace with the leaders when they edged out Ulinzi Starlets 2-0. The victory sees them remain tied on 46 points with Gaspo, with the latter at the top on goal difference.
Elsewhere, Zetech Sparks held Trans Nzoia Falcons to a 1-1 draw. Trans Nzoia scored their goals through Leomda Nakhumila in the 13th minute and appeared to be taking all the points until the 90th minute when Fridhaus Abudala levelled the scores.
In another match, Nakuru City Queens and Wadadia played out an entertaining 3-3 draw.
