WPL Gaspo face stern test in encounter against Thika Queens

Festus Chuma 07:00 - 10.05.2023

The Gatundu South based side and Vihiga Queens are tied at the top.

Football Kenya Federation Women’s Premier League leaders Gaspo Women FC face a stern test of their credentials when they face defending champions Thika Queens at Thika Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Gaspo are placed on top with 43 points from 18 matches, and this will be another perfect opportunity to secure maximum points as they continue with the maiden league title.

The Purples claimed a 3-0 win over Kisumu All Starlets at GEMS Cambridge School in their latest league fixture courtesy of Lydiah Akoth’s brace and a goal from Lavyne Achola.

Thika Queens will face one of their toughest tasks up against Gaspo, who will be looking to bounce back from their 1-0 loss to Vihiga Queens on the weekend.

The loss was the Thika’s eighth this season, led to the sacking of coach Fredrick Majani and the reappointment of Benter Achieng.

Thika has 27 points from 18 matches, and they will fight to get 12 out of their four remaining matches to finish in a respectable top-four position.

Elsewhere, second-placed Vihiga Queens will lock horns with third-placed Ulinzi Stralets at the Elinzi Sports Complex.

Vihiga secured their 14th win of the season when they defeated Thika Queens 1-0 last weekend as they maintained their tempo in the fight for their fifth title.

Boniface Nyamunyamu's coached side are tied on 43 points on the top, with a goal difference keeping Gaspo Women ahead.

Meanwhile, an unpredictable Zetech Sparks will host the Trans Nzoia Falcons at GEMS Cambridge Grounds.

The Students recorded their seventh win of the season when they defeated Nakuru City Queens in a seven-goal thriller last weekend.

Zetech are placed seventh on the table with 22 points, and only a goal difference separates them from Falcons, who are currently placed ninth on the log.

Ben Kitolo will be eager to lead Students to victory over Falcons, which would see his side move to the fifth spot on the log.

Falcons come into the match on the back of a 5-1 win over relegated outfit Kayole Starlets, and they will aim for another win as the victory will lift them from the red zone.

In another match of the day, Nakuru City Queens will welcome Wadadia at ASK Grounds in Nakuru.

Chrispin Walonga’s charges currently sit at position five on the log with 31 points and will be keen to move up on the log table with a victory over Wadadia at home.

Wadadia are fresh from a 2-0 loss to Ulinzi Starlets, and they will be chasing for maximum points to close the gap with the top three teams in the standings.

Looking at the first-round result, Wadadia walloped Nakuru City Queens 3-0 at the Mumias Sports Complex.
