The Deputy President was encouraged by the players’ decision to try out a league that Kenyans rarely feature in
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has lauded Kenyan stars John Mark Makwata and Duncan Otieno for shattering boarder limits to ply their trade in Botswana.
The duo signed for Botswana giants Gaborone United in August last year having switched from the Zambian Premier League and Gachagua has been encouraged by their decision to try out a league that Kenyan players rarely feature in.
“I had the pleasure of meeting two young outstanding footballers who have shattered border limits to venture into professional football first in Zambia and now in Botswana, where they have signed for Gaborone United,” Gachagua said on Sunday, shortly after meeting the two while on an official trip in Botswana.
“John Mark Makwata and Duncan Otieno, formerly AFC Leopards, have established themselves in Botswana and are happily exploiting their talent. I was fascinated by the journey of the two young men to professional football in African countries.
“Their focus and determination are a motivation to their peers and younger ones. I wish Makwata and Otieno all the best as they pursue their goals and shoot even higher.”
Makwata joined Gaborone United after a short stint with Kenya Police FC having signed for the club as a free agent from Zambian outfit Zesco United while Otieno also linked up with the club from the law enforcers after leaving Lusaka Dynamos.
Both players have previously featured for AFC Leopards, Makwata operating primarily as a striker, while Otieno can play in both midfield and defence. The two signed two-year deals with the seven-time Botswana champions.
