Chelsea suffered a historically bad year in 2023 after finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League for the first time since the Roman Abramovic era
Chelsea Football Club's 2023 season was marked by a series of challenges and changes, leading to what many consider a disappointing year for the club.
The season was characterised by a significant turnover in management, a series of high-profile and costly player acquisitions, and mixed results on the field.

‘It is just the start’ — Chelsea’s Cole Palmer looking forward to more sensational performances
Cole Palmer has caught the eye of Chelsea after several remarkable performances and is hoping that he can continue to repay the faith the Blues showed in getting him out of his Manchester City stagnation
However, these changes were unable to steer Chelsea in the right direction, with the Blues forced to endure a horrid year that saw them break their record for the most losses suffered in a calendar year.
Chelsea’s management changes
In 2023, Chelsea saw notable changes at the top. The club was led by a total of four managers throughout the year: Graham Potter, Bruno Saltor (interim), Frank Lampard, and Mauricio Pochettino.
This frequent change in leadership, particularly with Lampard taking charge in a crucial phase, led to a lack of consistent direction and strategy for the team.
Chelsea’s awful 2023 Premier League performance
Chelsea's performance in the Premier League was below the club's traditional standards. They finished in 12th place at the end of the 2022/23 season and followed that up by finishing the year in 10th place halfway through the 2023/24 season.
This was a significant drop considering the club's history of competing at the top of the table. The team scored 34 goals but conceded 31, leading to a nearly balanced but unimpressive goal difference.
Transfer market activity
Under the ownership of Todd Boehly, Chelsea was extremely active in the transfer market. Boehly, a well-known entrepreneur, led an aggressive investment strategy in player acquisitions. The club spent a staggering total of €829 million on new players in 2023, averaging an expenditure of about €2.27 million every day throughout the year.
Some of the notable signings included Enzo Fernandez for a record-breaking €121 million, the most expensive signing in the history of winter markets, and Moises Cicedo for €133 million, the fifth most expensive transfer in football history, as per Transfer Market
Player injuries and performance
The season was also marked by a series of injuries to key players, including Reece James, Wesley Fofana, Ben Chilwell, and others. This adversely affected the team's performance on the field. Additionally, many of the high-profile signings, such as Raheem Sterling, Mhykailo Mudryk, and Fernandez, did not perform up to expectations based on their transfer values.
Despite the setbacks and challenges of 2023, Chelsea Football Club, under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino, has the opportunity to rebuild and regain its status as a top team in English football. The focus is now on developing a clear football philosophy and ensuring that the squad is committed to achieving the club's objectives.
