Former UFC champ Francis Ngannou urges Cameroon's football team to reclaim legacy amid struggles in the 2023 African Cup of Nations.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou has urged the Cameroon national football team to uplift their game in the ongoing 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The Indomitable Lions faces the brink of elimination grappling with challenges that have left fans and players alike in a state of dismay.

With just one point from two games in Group C, the five-time African champions are teetering on the edge of an early exit from the tournament.

This comes as a shock to many, considering their illustrious history and the high expectations set by their past performances.

“Guys, our charisma and name are at stake, as well as the legacy of Roger Milla and Samuel Eto'o. Without the capital 'L', we're not the Indomitable Lions, just another lion among many. We're being talked down to,” Ngannou passionately stated on Sunday as per Actu Cameroon.

“Some say we think we own the continent, or tell me to delete my words (which I won't – if it bothers you, just ignore it), as if we're no longer a threat, and sadly, we're proving them right. It's time to rediscover our ferocity, determination, and Hèmlé, to stand out again. It's absurd to be mere bystanders when we should be at the forefront,” he added indicating a call to action for the team to reignite their passion and skill on the field.

Cameroon's current struggles can be attributed to a variety of factors. The absence of Vincent Aboubakar, the 2022 Golden Boot winner, due to injury, has left a gaping hole in the team's offensive lineup.

Karl Toko Ekambi, who has been a reliable striker over the years, has not been able to fill this void, further exacerbating the team's goal-scoring woes.

Samuel Eto’o, now the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation, was seen visibly frustrated in the stands as the team's supporters expressed their disappointment vocally in their previous game aganist Senegal.

However, there is still a glimmer of hope for the team as their next match against Gambia could be a turning point.

While Ngannou prepares for his own battle in the boxing ring against Anthony Joshua on March 8th, his heart remains with his homeland's football team.

His transition from the UFC to boxing has been nothing short of remarkable, mirroring the kind of resilience and determination he now seeks from the Indomitable Lions.
