Obiero, who arrived in the Rising Stars camp earlier this week, will be hoping to make the final 21-man squad for the upcoming tournament.

When Zech Obiero earns his official maiden cap for the Kenya U-20 national team Rising Stars, he will have achieved a milestone he once hoped to complete growing up as a youngster.

Obiero, who plays for Leyton Orient in England’s third tier division League One, finally honoured his call up to the side ahead of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations ( AFCON) set to be held in Egypt later this month.

The 19-year-old was called up to the set up in March 2024 before the side flew to Malawi for the Four Nations tournament, but withdrew.

A year later, he finally gets to fulfil his dream of playing for the side. So far, he has already taken part in two friendly matches against Kariobangi Sharks and the Kenya Police U-20 set up.

Reveling in his excitement, Obiero was ecstatic at finally being able to link up and gel with his teammates, with a glorious chance to make his Kenyan father proud.

“I think in the first two games, I was just really excited to get out there with the boys. I've always wanted to play for Kenya — that’s always been a big deal for me because of my father,”  Obiero said from the side’s training camp at the Thika Foundation Academy.

Obiero, who is the younger brother of former Huddersfield academy product Micah, has opened up on his struggles adapting to the tropical climate and altitude of Kenya, which sharply contrasts that of England.

“The experience so far has been good, although it’s been really hot and I’ve struggled a bit with the conditions at times. But overall, it’s been a really positive experience.”

Obiero, who used to play for Tottenham until he was released at the age of 14 to join Leyton Orient, has revealed his ultimate big dream for the side.

“Obviously, I want to help us make it out of the group and go as far as possible in the tournament. I don’t think we’re underdogs at all. We’re preparing well, training hard every day. From what I’ve seen, the mindset in camp is strong. Everyone’s focused and ready.”

At Kenya, he is getting used to the robust physical style the players are imposing as they hope to sail past a group C side that features Sierra Leone, Zambia and Senegal, a challenge he is willing to overcome.

“I think the most challenging part for me has been adjusting to the different playing styles. Where I usually play, it’s a certain style, and then coming here with Kenya, it’s a different approach.

“But for me, it’s all about having the right mindset wherever I am. Whether I’m at Leyton or with Kenya, I just need to train hard, play hard — that part doesn’t change.”

Obiero has taken part in 10 League 1 games this season, but has had to observe from the sidelines for the last few months.

The youngster hopes playing an integral role for Kenya at the AFCON will help kickstart his career at the club, especially with an eye on helping his father’s country of birth become only the second national side to qualify for a World Cup after the U-17 girls’ side in 2024.

“For now, my focus is short-term — AFCON is just around the corner, and that’s where my mind is. At club level, it’s about playing as many games as I can and seeing how I can impact the team. I just want to help in any way I can and influence games in a positive way.”

With the Rising Stars aiming to qualify for a FIFA U-20 World Cup, Obiero’s timing could not be better. His journey is just beginning, but it’s already one worth watching.
