The 29-year-old striker, once a hopeful for the Super Eagles, has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter for the Dutch giants, leading to speculation about a potential departure during the current transfer window.

Sunderland enter the race for Akpom

Championship side Sunderland have reportedly joined the pursuit of Chuba Akpom, according to Foot Mercato.

They are keen to bolster their attack as they aim to secure promotion to the Premier League and Akpom’s proven track record in the division—where he scored an impressive 28 goals in 40 appearances for Middlesbrough in his last season—makes him an ideal candidate.

Akpom has been ignored by past Super Eagles bosses.

Sunderland’s interest follows their recent success in securing French midfielder Enzo Le Fée on loan from AS Roma, as they gear up for the second half of the season.

While Sunderland leads the English contingent, Ligue 1 sides RC Lens and Lille OSC have also been monitoring Akpom’s situation at Ajax.

Both clubs view the striker as a valuable reinforcement for their attacking options ahead of the second half of the current campaign.

Since joining Ajax in 2023, Akpom has shown flashes of brilliance but has struggled to cement his place in the starting lineup.

Despite scoring eight goals and providing one assist in 31 appearances this season, he has started just 15 matches. This lack of consistent playing time has opened the door for potential suitors.
