FKF has been called on to go down the Cameroon route and introduce player's salary caps in the Kenyan Premier League.

The Football Kenya Federation has been urged to introduce salary caps for the FKF Premier League (FKFPL) and other local Kenyan leagues like the National Super League (NSL) and FKF Women's Premier League.

This comes amidst concerns that Kenyan Premier League players are earning minuscule salaries that do not reflect their status at the top of Kenyan football and elite clubs.

The salary issue in the FKFPL has been a constant, with players reportedly going for months without pay, save for a few well-backed corporate clubs.

Kenyan football stakeholder Bob Collins has called on the Federation to go the Cameroon route and introduce player salary caps across Kenyan leagues.

Collins, who was in contention for the FKF Chief Executive Officer post before Harold Ndege was appointed, believes the initiative will help professionalize Kenyan football further.

"This is not even a personal feeling of mine but the ideal situation. We should be having a salary cap so that a player knows, to play in the Premier League, such and such is the minimum wage," said the Collins in a recent interview on the Exit Show.

"I think Eto'o, when he became Cameroon's Federation boss, set those standards and I think that's the best way to go," he added.

Former Barcelona star and Cameroonian football legend Samuel Eto'o, who was elected Cameroon's Federation president in 2021, introduced a salary cap that has seen Cameroonian footballers’ wages and timely pay improve drastically, as per the Guardian Post.

"So that we have that structure such that players in the NSL know their minimum wage and so on. That will raise our standards because you will find that teams are looking for the best because of the wage, and that's how our football grows," he added.

"It’s something that should happen and I think there are plans in place to ensure that it happen," he added.

Key Focus on The Women's League

Collins also urged that this initiative should be extended to the FKF Women's Premier League, whom he notes have been neglected and forgotten.

"But I would emphasise that it's an initiative that should cut across, including the women's league, not just the men’s. We are a bit biased toward men's football and forget that we have wonderful girls who have made us proud qualifying for the World Cup," he said, highlighting the heroics of Kenya's U17 women's national team, who became the only ever Kenyan team to qualify for a World Cup tournament.

"It's a challenge to the federation to ensure that goodwill from sponsors turns into money for our players. If it's happening in Cameroon, why not Kenya?" he noted.
