The much-awaited Mashemeji derby was postponed for the second time on Wednesday.

The Football Kenya Federation has promised Kenyans to fix a new date for the Mashemeji derby that was set to be played on Sunday.

The highly anticipated Mashemeji derby pitting record champions Gor Mahia and fiercest rivals AFC Leopards was postponed for the second time on Wednesday, due to inability of the home team (AFC Leopards) to secure a suitable venue.

The FKF said the venue setback will be sorted in due course, urging fans to be patient since the federation is burning their midnight oil to ensure Kenya's finest derby is played under the right conditions.

"We know this is disappointing for the fans, players and everyone who had been looking forward to the match, but we are working to ensure it is played under the right conditions," FKF said.

"A new date for the match will be communicated in due course. We appreciate your patience and understanding."

FKF said it regrets the decision of the postponement. Nyayo and Moi International Sports Center Kasarani Stadium, the primary venue for high-profile fixtures, remain unavailable due to ongoing renovations in preparation for the CHAN tournament set for August.

According to sources within AFC Leopards, club chairman Dan Shikanda had remained hopeful of receiving a positive response from the government regarding the stadium’s availability.

However, discussions reached an impasse, forcing the postponement of Kenya’s biggest football derby yet again.

The Mashemeji Derby is regarded as a high-risk fixture due to the long-standing rivalry between the two clubs, both of which boast a massive fan base that has fueled their competition since the 1960s.

AFC Leopards, currently fifth in the FKF Premier League table with 34 points, had been eager to take on their arch-rivals to boost their title ambitions.

Gor Mahia, on the other hand, sit third with 36 points, just five points behind league leaders Kenya Police.
